Most needed are those “third places” which lend a public balance to the increased privatization of home life. Third places are nothing more than informal public gathering places. The phrase “third places” derives from considering our homes to be the “first” places in our lives, and our work places the “second.”

Ray Oldenburg

Why Make the WCF Campus a Community Space?

American society faces an isolation crisis. As the pressures of work and domestic obligations have increased, we have lost the places where we used to connect with friends and neighbors. Originally described by sociologist Ray Oldenburg, these “third places”—libraries, coffee shops, houses of worship, social and civic clubs, bowling alleys, libraries, and more—are central to community vitality. But for a variety of reasons, we have lost many of these physical spaces over to last 30 years and become increasingly isolated from each other. Americans are more disengaged from each other than ever: post-pandemic, 17% of Americans claimed to have zero friends.

WCF is committed to being a welcoming and inclusive third place in our neighborhood, regardless of individual religious belief or practice. Our campus is open is everyone. We invite you to sit down for a friendship dinner, hang out in the Barking Lot, or join us at one of our free community special events. As part of being of, for, and by the community, WCF welcomes your ideas for making our campus a vibrant, welcoming space that meets the needs of our neighbors. If you have an idea or feedback, let us know!
